Description
A FLAMBE-GLAZED VASE, MEIPING, LATE QING DYNASTY TO REPUBLIC PERIOD 清末民初窯變釉梅瓶

Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價

China, 19th - earlier 20th century. Finely potted with elegantly curved sides rising to a broad rounded shoulder, surmounted by a short waisted neck with a lipped rim. The exterior covered with a finely crackled and streaked glaze of rich crushed-strawberry tone with splashes of bluish lavender above the shoulder and to the interior of the mouth. The thick glaze builds a distinct line of glaze drops in remarkably high relief above the foot.

Provenance: Swiss trade.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, expected firing flaws, minor chips to the foot rim resulting from production. Intentional crackling to glaze, some of which has developed into fine glaze lines over time, including a vertical glaze line along the body. Displaying exceptionally well.

Weight: 2,433 g
Dimensions: Height 32.5 cm

Vessels covered in the striking flambe glaze reflect the Yongzheng and Qianlong emperor's fondness for Song dynasty 'Jun' wares. It was Yongzheng who first commissioned the development of new glazes in imitation of 'Jun' vessels and a total of nine different types of revival 'Jun' glazes were created, which can be found recorded in the 1732 edition of the Jiangxi tongzhi (General Description of the Jiangxi Province). For the list and description of the nine glazes see S.W. Bushell, Oriental Ceramic Art, London, 1981, pp 194-96. The flambe glaze was perfected under Qianlong's reign and for an extended period thereafter when many wares covered in this highly attractive glaze were produced.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related flambe-glaze vase illustrated in Selected Ceramics from the Collection of Mr. & Mrs. J. M. Hu, Shanghai, 1989, pl. 17.
