Item Details
Description
  • Title:Jacob Steinheimer and Estate Papers, Photographs, and other Effects Civil War Jewish Reconstructor
  • Description: From the estate of Jacob Steinheimer and his wife, Georgie Mayer-Steinheimer -possibly related to David Mayer- a prominent Jewish family in Atlanta both before the Civil War and especially during Reconstruction, when they and their families are largely credited with restoring the Jewish faith and expanding the Jewish community during this period. Rabbi Jacob Steinheimer is credited by Rabbi David Geffen, in his 2017 article, as having read the Torah to the congregation during Atlanta’s first Rosh Hashanah in 1867. This lot contains a wide variety, and wide timeframe, of the Steinheimer’s lives in Atlanta, Georgia. It includes multiple prayer books, letters from Jacob’s congregation in both English and Hebrew, a small sheepskin scroll with the Shema written in Hebrew, a locket of Jacob and Georgie, a log of births, deaths and marriages in the families, Jacob’s 1891 certification of initiation into the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), and other miscellaneous items and letters dating through the 1950’s. Other effects in this lot include obituaries, a lock of hair, several tintypes, wedding invitations, correspondences by Jacob and Georgie’s descendants, and more. Because of the Steinheimer’s integral role in bringing and restoring the Jewish faith and Community to Atlanta, especially during such a critical period, the proceeds of this lot will be donated to the Steinheimer’s historical synagogue, and the Atlanta Jewish community at large.
