Description
Sherman and Staff Albumen Print, with Ghosted Image of Grant on Verso
A mounted albumen print of William T. Sherman and his staff. Measuring 13" x 9.25", [Washington, D.C.], photographed May 1865 (printed between 1880 and 1889). Attributed to Alexander Gardner. Mounted to the overall size of 17" x 14" - on the mat are the printed identifications and rank of the sitters. On the verso is a unique ghosting imprint of the image that Gardner took of Ulysses S. Grant and his staff. Light soiling and scratching to the mat. Worn corners. Overall very fine.
Sherman is seated in the center and surrounded by his staff, posed in two rows - seated and standing. The photo was likely taken in Washington when the armies of Grant and Sherman took part in the Grand Review of May 23 and May 24.Â
