Host (Nikolaus Thomas) Salix,vol.1 [all published], first edition, letterpress title, 5pp. dedication to Emperor Franz I of Austria, preface leaf (bound at end) and 34pp. text, 105 finely hand-coloured engraved plates by Joh.Ibmayer, title soiled but otherwise a very crisp and clean copy, old ink library stamp on title and verso of plates, contemporary half roan, rather worn, joints split, crudely reinforced with sticky tape, broken with last few plates becoming loose, [Great Flower Books p.104; Nissen BBI 936], folio, Vienna, A.Strauss, 1828-[30].

***Magnificent and exceedingly rare monograph on the willow. Host was director of the garden at Schönbrunn and principal physician to Emperor Franz I. Only one copy has appeared at auction in the last thirty five years: the Earl of Derby-de Belder copy, which has come up three times. Arpad Plesch was apparently unable to acquire a copy..
