Description
[Sievert (August, 1820-1840, Lutheran minister)] A collection of over 1,100 original watercolour botanical drawings, pen and ink with watercolour, some heightened with bodycolour, a few with egg-white, sheets c.220 x 180mm., a few double-page or on folding sheets with watercolour on each side, captioned in ink in contemporary hand in German and Latin, very occasional light spotting but the majority still very bright and clean, loose in 26 wrappers numbered and labelled in ink in contemporary hand (numbered 1-25, with fifth section in 2 parts), together in contemporary board box with lid, inscribed "Grossvater Sievert" in pencil on inside of lid, rubbed at joints, [c.1840]. August Sievert was a Lutheran minister in Grünwettersbach, nr. Karlsruhe from 1820-1835.
***Magnificent early 19th century German florilegium, illustrating both wild and cultivated flowers including tulips, roses, carnations, lilies etc. as well as some fruits, mushrooms and herbs. The drawings are grouped according to the Linnaean botanical classification system and depict 1035 species, both native and exotic, beautifully executed in natural colours and nuanced shades, and predominantly in natural size. The final group is a selection of plants from different classes, many exotic, including orchids, azaleas, cacti and a Victoria Regia..
