Timor Woven Headdress with Metal and Beaded Adornments, Lesser Sunda Islands, Early 20th C. The Timorese head cloth, worn by men, is adorned with small silver discs, historically associated with headhunting. The frontal design, shaped like a tree, suggests its use as part of a war costume. In Timor, the act of headhunting held significance, as severed heads were believed to replenish village fertility and prosperity. Size: 27'' x 49'' (69 x 124 cm).
