Ben Shahn (American, 1898-1969). An original gouache painting on deckled edge paper. Titled, "Lute and Molecule," produced circa 1958. A still life work in the modern style, depicting a stringed musical instrument with molecular pattern designs, in shades of gray, brown, blue, black and yellow. Artist signed to lower right. Inscribed title at lower left. Presented under glass in a gilt wood frame. The work formed the basis for two of the artist's most popular screenprints, "Lute and Molecule, No. 1," and "Lute and Molecule, No. 2." Provenance; a private collection.

Condition: Good to fair condition having mild to moderate surface wear and cockling to edges, with age toning. Frame having storage wear to edges and corners. Not examined out of frame. Estate fresh to the market.
