Description
[THEATRE]. BATEMAN, Kate Josephine (1842-1917). CDV of Bateman as “Leah” in “Leah the Forsaken”. [New York: C. D. Fredericks & Co., ca. 1864]. Cabinet photo on photographer’s mount. Photo approximately 3 ½ x 2 ¼”. Mount approximately 3 ¾ x 2 ½”. Some toning, minor rubbing, soiling, upper margin of mount trimmed a bit close with no apparent loss to photo. Very good. Bateman spent nearly her entire life on the American and British stage, and was one of the most popular actresses of her day. James Joyce even referred to her in Ulysses (published in 1922: “\Poor papa! How he used to talk of Kate Bateman in that. Outside the Adelphi in London waited all the afternoon to get in. Year before I was born that was: sixty-five.\") From the Mark Rucker Collection."""
