A SIGNED COPY OF HERBERT HOOVER'S SPEECH GIVEN AT THE DEDICATION OF LINCOLN'S TOMB. HOOVER, HERBERT. 1874-1964. Address of President Hoover at the Dedication of the Remodeled Tomb of Abraham Lincoln.... Washington: United States Government Printing Office, 1931. 8vo (230 x 145 mm). 8 pp including original printed self-wrappers. Pages toned, light creasing and wear. Provenance: acquired by the present owner from the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop, 1990s. After Lincoln's assassination, a group of Springfield citizens raised funds to construct a memorial for the late President. The first tomb was completed in 1874 and Lincoln's remains were placed inside along with those of his three youngest sons. In 1895, the state of Illinois acquired the memorial, which had by then fallen into disrepair. The state restored and rebuilt the exterior of the memorial from 1899-1901, and in 1930-31, the interior was reconstructed in a contemporary Art Deco style, in which it remains today. At the 1931 dedication ceremony, President Herbert Hoover delivered the present address in which he, after complementing the citizens of Illinois for their memorial to our greatest President, reflects upon Lincoln's 'transcendent qualities of patience, fortitude, and steadfastness.'
