Description

WOODROW WILSON ON THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS. WILSON, WOODROW. 1856-1924. Typed Letter Signed ('Woodrow Wilson') to Martin F. Ansel of Greenville, SC mentioning the ratification of the Peace Treaty and the League of Nations, 1 p, 4to (223 x 175 mm), Washington, July 12, 1919, on White House letterhead, with integral blank leaf, some dampstaining and toning to both leaves, thumbsoiling. 'It was very gratifying to get your friendly letter of July 9th, and I thank you for it with all my heart. We will indeed now pull all together for the ratification of the Peace Treaty and the League of Nations, and I think the pull will be irresistible.' Martin Ansel (1850-1945) was a two-term governor of South Carolina who served as judge of the Greenville County Court from 1920 until his death. In this letter Wilson thanks Ansel for his congratulatory note regarding the negotiation of the peace treaty with Germany signed on June 8, 1919 and the hoped for ratification of the Treaty of Versailles which would establish a League of Nations to prevent future global wars. Wilson faced opposition in the U.S. Senate to the terms of the treaty, which ultimately was not ratified, forcing the Harding administration to make a separate peace treaty with Germany that removed the clause requiring the U.S. to join the league. At the time of this writing, however, Wilson has great hope that his vision for the League of Nations will be realized.
