Description
Rare roller jug with tin mount Durlach, dat. 1754 Pewter ring. Retracted lip margin and slightly projecting foot edge. On the white-glazed wall in green, blue, ochre, yellow, manganese and black, finely painted décor: crowned laurel wreath, in it a conifer/tree of life on a grass base. Above it initials ''IDB'', laterally dated ''1754''. On the back and on the pewter handle flower arrangements. Stepped pewter lid with spherical pusher. H. 20.5 cm (with lid) Literature on the form: Petrasch, Ernst (ed.); Durlacher Faiencen, 1723 - 1847. Exhibition in the Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe, Schloß vom 20. Juni bis 28. September 1975, Karlsruhe 1975 , S. 460, 28-31. Roller jugs were not produced nearly as frequently as the Durlach pear jugs. (Lit. Durlacher Faiencen, 1995, p. 19). In 2016, a Durlach roller jug appeared on the art trade, also dated 1754, with the indication that this piece is one of the earliest known Durlach roller jugs, painted by Cyriacus Löwer.
