Description
1705 ENORMOUS Ribadeneira Lives of Saints Jesuit Martyrs Hagiography Martyrdom
Pedro de Ribadeneira was a 16th-century Spanish Jesuit priest who is best known for studying with Ignatius of Loyola. One of his most important works was Flos Sanctorum, a collection of biographical sketches of the lives of saints. While it is sometimes mislabeled as The Golden Legend, this work is a classic example of hagiography and has played an important role in the development of iconography of Christian art throughout the Renaissance.
This 1705 German edition was translated by Johann Hornig, published in Augsburg. It features impressive illustrations of the saints – many of which are portrayed being tortured.
