Description
Raoul Maucherat De Longpre (French, 1859-1911), Still Life with pink roses and lilacs, gouache on paper, signed lower right "Raoul M. De Longpre fils". Gilded, bead molded frame. Sight: 21-1/4" H x 27-1/2" W, frame: 28-1/2" H x 35-1/2" W. Provenance: Property of a Maryville, TN collector (inherited from his mother). Biography: Best known for his floral still lifes, Raoul DeLongpre was born into a family of artists and was painting flowers on fans for a Paris firm by the age of twelve. His scientific studies of flowers exhibit a high degree of accuracy. Lilacs (which symbolized youthful innocence and first love) were his favorites. At age 21, he began exhibiting in the Paris Salon. Whether or not he traveled to America is unknown, but several of his paintings made their way into private and museum collections here, likely through the efforts of his brother, fellow floral artist Paul De Longpre, who moved to California and possibly acted as Raoul's agent. A piece of paper describing Paul's background is taped to the back of this painting.
