Description
Japanese Scroll Painting of Maiko Playing Cards is by the early 20th century Kyoto artist, Matsumoto Ichiyo (1893-1952). A geisha in training, the maiko, is playing with a western set of cards. Her pose with her back to the viewer shows her tasteful hairstyle and kimono as well as the cards she plays. Appropriately, she holds the one with hearts. The abstract brushwork describing the kimono fabric is very much in keeping with Taisho Period (1912-1926) styles. The artist signature and seal are in the upper left corner. The fabric of the hanging scroll mounting is well-chosen to accentuate the color and style of the painting. Provenance: The James and Christine Heusinger Collection
