Jerome Thibouville Lamy Violin, Mirecourt, ca. 1880, with Friedrich Zach Signed Bow
Item Details
Description
Jerome Thibouville Lamy Violin, Mirecourt, ca. 1880, with Bow. French, full size violin, bearing two labels "Copie D' Lofredus Cappa in Saluzzio Feci Anno 1640" and a round "J.T.L. label for Jerome Thibouville Lamy, a violin marker from Mirecourt, established in 1815. In general this is a well-made violin in excellent condition and shows very good workmanship in the body but it does not have its original neck and scroll. The neck has been replaced with a German made neck from another instrument according to family history and records this was done in the 1950s as a repair. There is a broken button and heel shim that was probably repaired at this time. The repair and neck are in good condition and do not affect the violin's usefulness. From family history and confirmed by observation this violin was made in the late 1800's, probably circa 1880. The back is a two piece fine flamed maple with ribs of matching character and flame pattern. The belly is fine to medium grained Spruce in excellent condition. Both the back and belly are well made with high full arching well formed F-holes, wide purfling with the only repairs apparent being the broken button area. The violin is covered with a slightly OPEC orange brown varnish with where consistent with age but in general good condition. The varnish on the scroll is a close match but not the same even with the replaced neck the instrument remains a nice example of the J.T.L French production. This comes with a standard handled case, wood pegs, rosin and a bow stamped "Friedrich Zach" and number 13 behind the frog, near the button. Pernambuco with shield, grip, and nickel mounted frog with Parisian eyes; three ring button (no eye at the tip), in good condition.
Dimensions: Body length 359mm, upper bout width 167mm, lower bout width 209mm, C-bout width 113mm, rib height at upper and lower corners 32mm, end pin height 32mm.
