Cesar Dominguez (Mexican, b. 1961). Mata Ortiz pottery jar. Incised signature on underside of base. A gorgeous pottery jar by Mata Ortiz artist Cesar Dominguez featuring a marbled surface acquired by mixing different clays and a mesmerizing design. The bulbous body of the jar is enveloped in nested linear motifs that form a hypnotizing pattern surrounding a pair of lozenges containing owls on opposite sides. The narrow neck of the vessel flares outward to a bifurcated rim resembling a fishtail with a band of crested waves surrounding it, further emphasizing the aquatic imagery. A circle inside a diamond is featured at the base of the vessel, with each corner terminating in a meander motif. Size: 7.5" Diameter x 9.1" H (19 cm x 23.1 cm); 9.4" H (23.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Cesar Dominguez is one of the first generation of Mata Ortiz potters, having started in 1984. He has worked his way up into that small group of Mata Ortiz potters whose work is considered ceramic fine art.
Mata Ortiz pottery is a recreation of the Mogollon pottery found in and around the archeological site of Casas Grandes (Paquime) in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Named after the modern town of Mata Ortiz, which is near the archeological site, the style was propagated by Juan Quezada Celado. Quezada learned on his own to recreate this ancient pottery and then went on to update it.
