West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba people, early 20th century CE. A tall, wooden, phallic-shaped shrine or divination figure, in the form of a long, cylindrical body with a flared base and an elongated head with a conical, incised coiffure capped by a small bobble. The figure has discernible eyes, nose, mouth, and brow line and some encrusted deposits on its surface. Size: 3.5" W x 15" H (8.9 cm x 38.1 cm)
Provenance: ex Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired prior to 1970

Condition
Inactive insect damage has led to losses on one side of the base, but the figure still stands well on its own. A large crack runs up the full length of the body, but it is stable.
