Notes/Literature: This painting was likely made at the time the US Navy Patrol Torpedo boat 109 was stationed in the Solomon Islands, South Pacific, under commander John F. Kennedy. During this mission, the ship was attacked by a Japanese destroyer. Kennedy famously swam miles in enemy waters searching for help, ultimately reaching Allies in time for a successful rescue.
