A native of Nimes, the young Emmanuel Coulange-Lautrec left, after having taken some lessons at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Nimes, for that of Marseille to study architecture and decoration under the teaching of Francois Pierre Barry. He began to exhibit regularly in regional fairs including Marseille where his art was noticed: "I find a lot of pleasure in the composition of Mr. Coulange-Lautrec: family at the sea bath. The poetry of the sky and the water emerges well from this summer evening. There is also a great solidity of brush in the rocks that border the sea and in the women who come to bathe. (in Tribune artistique et litteraire du Midi dated January 1, 1869, p 38)After the good reviews received from art lovers, the artist decided to present himself in Paris where he had the opportunity to exhibit at the Salon in 1869, 1870 and 1876.He then made several trips to Tunisia and Algeria and was thus associated with the orientalist movement. He also brought back a monumental painting View of the city and the ports of Algiers which was acquired by the State. From 1877, he became a professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Marseille where he taught perspective in particular.
