Description
Manufactured in 1915 for the Royal Air Force, under Colt contract. The "W" prefix in front of the serial number designates this was originally calibered in the 455 Webley for the British. Birmingham proof marks on the right side of the frame under the serial number and one on the left side of the frame in front of the slide stop. Many of these Webley calibered 1911's were exported back to the US after WWI. Since then, this full size 1911 has been upgraded with an ACE .22LR conversion kit, professionally re-blued and exhibits approximately 75% engraved coverage. Floral scroll engraving adorns each area of the frame, slide and base of the magazine. Half moon blade front sight and rear windage adjustable notch sight. Left side of the slide is stamped "COLT'S P.T.F.A. MFG CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A./PAT'D APR. 20, 1897. SEPT. 9, 1902. DEC. 19, 1905. FEB 14, 1911. AUG. 19, 1913" with the rampant Colt at the rear of the slide. Right side slide is stamped "COLT ACE (in diamond) .22 LONG RIFLE". Right side frame is stamped "GOVERNMENT MODEL W 58128". Grip panels are hand-carved bone depicting a dragon and flower surrounding the screws. Period correct lanyard loop. Right side panel is inscribed on the back "F TIGERS/OD '37". Signed "BAB" under the left side grip panel at the base. Includes the Colt factory early ACE magazine, stamped "COLT ACE 22LR" on the base with matching scroll engraving. This pistol can definitely be described as a unicorn of many colors. CALIBER: .22 LR. S/N: W58128. FFL STATUS: Curio & Relic.
Condition
Finish retains 98%+ reapplied blue. Frame does show some very small areas of pitting under the reapplied finish. Grips show light discoloration, a few stress lines underneath and some light wear in the once sharp areas of the bone carving. Bore and mechanics are excellent.
