Description
Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A beautiful polychrome pottery dish hailing from the Panamanian Kingdom of Gran Cocle. It has a short pedestal base with three slender slits and a flared foot, a wide basin with a shallow central cavity, and a rolled rim painted in a beautiful color palette. The bowl face, characteristic of the Conte/Macaracas style, features a wondrous two-headed saurian creature - birdlike/dragon/crocodile/amphibian creatures painted in red, purple, and black atop a cream ground. The heads face right and left, each surmounted with grand crests, and stemming from a standing body with long, curling claws and delineated legs. With such fine artistry and painstaking detail, this is a fabulous example from the Gran Cocle Kingdom that rivals that of even the finest masters of ancient art! Size: 10" W x 5.75" H (25.4 cm x 14.6 cm).
