Artist: After Toshihid Title: Hideyoshi Dismounts His Horse Pursued by a Soldier of the Akechi Date: Circa 1930-1940 (Showa). Publisher: Shobunsha. Medium: Japanese Color Plate Print. Author: Kokushi Meiga Kankokai. Place of Origin: Tokyo Size: (7x14.1/2in) Special Notes: In tiny font, listing the historical events pictured of samurai battles and historical scenes right margin. Comments - Terrific image of Toyotomi Hideyoshi leaping off his horse to face an Akechi samurai pursuing him. After the death of Oda Nobunaga at the hands of the treacherous Akechi Mitsuhide, Hideyoshi led Nobunaga's army to defeat the Akechi at the Battle of Yamazaki. Here, he strikes a bold pose, his riding crop raised above his head as his startled horse begins to bolt, hooves pawing at the air. He wears a fine suit of armor over a yellow robe and pants and a horned battle helmet. His enemy rushes towards him along a zigzag path between fields, a spear in hand. Stone stairs at right lead to the entrance gate of a mansion alongside two tall trees, and mountains can be seen in the distance beyond a few farmhouses. A great dramatic image, beautifully composed and detailed with burnishing on the armor and saddle.
