Description
This antique map, created by Sebastian Munster in 1558, celebrates Florence, the city that gave birth to the Renaissance. Munster, recognized as one of the three greatest mapmakers of the 1500s, crafted this map as part of the influential book on geography, the Cosmographia, published in Basel, Switzerland. Florence is depicted with the Arno River gracefully winding through its center, connected by bridges that unite the city's two sides. The map showcases prominent churches and palaces, all enclosed within the protective embrace of the city's defensive walls. Crafted through wood block engraving and hand-colored with meticulous care, this map measures 14 1/2" x 9" and is presented in excellent condition, with authenticity guaranteed. On the verso, German text accompanies an engraving of Padua, further enriching the historical context of the map.
