Description
FOUR PAIR OF SPECTACLES
American, late 19th to early 20th century. One pair of coin silver with rounded rectangular lenses and frames in original "Dexter & Haskins" case, another pair silver finished with rounded rectangular lenses and frames in metal case circa 1870, a myopic pair in gold finish with element segments and hallmarked saddle bridge in hinged case circa 1910, the last with drop eye blue steel frames in red case circa 1870.

From the collection of Dr. J. William Rosenthal, M.D.

Dr. Rosenthal was a well-known ophthalmologist, an expert on the history of spectacles and other visual aids, a renowned collector, an author, and a generous benefactor of many institutions. His father, Jonas W. Rosenthal, MD, is the namesake of the museum of ophthalmology at Tulane University. Optical devices from his collection can be found in over sixteen museums including the Museum of Vision of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
