TWO TORTOISESHELL GLASS CASES WITH WIG SPECTACLES
English, 19th century, 3 pieces. A silver mounted case with large presentation escutcheon that reads "Presented to William McAdams Corporal R. S. & M. by a few of his friends Glasgow, 1856". Together with another silver mounted case, the top reading "John Cox - Bristol", and a pair of wig spectacles with tortoiseSHELL frame and oval lenses.
From the collection of Dr. J. William Rosenthal, M.D.
Dr. Rosenthal was a well-known ophthalmologist, an expert on the history of spectacles and other visual aids, a renowned collector, an author, and a generous benefactor of many institutions. His father, Jonas W. Rosenthal, MD, is the namesake of the museum of ophthalmology at Tulane University. Optical devices from his collection can be found in over sixteen museums including the Museum of Vision of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
