Nien Cheng 念鄭 or Zheng Nian 鄭念 (January 28, 1915 - November 2, 2009) was the pen name of Yao Nien-Yuan (姚念媛). She was a Chinese author known for recounting her experiences during the Cultural Revolution in her memoir Life and Death in Shanghai.
ARTIST BIO: Li Kuchan 李苦禅 (1899 - 1983) born in Gaotang County of Shandong Province, was a great painter, calligrapher and art educator, is a great master of the traditional Chinese free idea painting. During the early years, he studied Western painting techniques in an art school in Beijing. Later on, he became a student of renowned Chinese artist Qi Baishi, and began to study Chinese painting. In 1930, he worked as a professor at the Hangzhou Art School and Beiping Art School, as well as at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Li well combined western techniques and spirituality in sculpture and painting into his Chinese painting teaching. He specialized in bird-and-flower paintings in the freehand style that captures the spirit of its subjects through expressive calligraphic brushwork and simplified forms.
