PROVENANCE:

Nien Cheng 念鄭 or Zheng Nian 鄭念 (January 28, 1915 - November 2, 2009) was the pen name of Yao Nien-Yuan (姚念媛). She was a Chinese author known for recounting her experiences during the Cultural Revolution in her memoir Life and Death in Shanghai.

ARTIST BIO:
Tao Lengyue 陶冷月 (1895 - 1985) Born in Suzhou, Jiangsu, His original name was Shan-yong, his character name is Yong-shao, and formal name is Yong, Hong-zhai, and Ke-meng Taoist Priest. He was graduated from the Jiangsu two-chi pedagogical school. And was the professor in the art department of Yali University. In 1926, he published his own album, Chi Yuan-pei written the foreword for him. In 1932 Chi Yuanpei set the style for him, he described its: "structure and the essences, strictly followed the tradition; the picture and the essences, however, has a unique European feeling." In 1930, Tao LengYue settled down in Shanghai and made his living by selling his paintings. After 1949, he successively taught in the Shanghai Fuxin middle school, and the Wu-ai middle school. When his 89 years old in 1984, he joined the Shanghai artist association, and was hired for the Shanghai Culture and History museum.

Tang Yun 唐云 (1910 - 1993) was born in 1910 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. He was a Chinese painting master and had various courtesy names: Xiachen, 侠尘; Yahocheng, 药城; Yaochen, 药尘; Yaoweng, 药翁; Laoyao, 老药. Tang Yun was the name he picked up after becoming an artist. His studio names were 'Da shizhai' 大石斋 or 'Shan leixuan' 山雷轩. Tang had an interest in Chinese calligraphy and painting since his childhood, and had been imitating various ancient masterpieces before he was 17 years old. In 1922, Tang attended a church school, Huilan Middle School in Hangzhou. In 1928, he bacame a Chinese painting teacher in Hangzhou Fengshi Female Middle School. IN 1939, he was hired to be a professor of CHinese painting in both Xinhua Art Specialist School and the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, the present Nanjing Art School. However, later he quit his job being an art teacher, focusing exclusively on painting itself. Tang was good at painting landscapes (shanshui) and flowers and birds (huaniao), while sometimes he painted human figures. Except for painting, Tang was also good at calligraphy, especially semi - cursive script and seal script. In the meantime, Tang was a collector and connoisseur of various types of Chinese art, including Chinese painting and Yixing ware. Tang's collection is known for 8 pieces of Mansheng pot (manshenghu 曼生壶). All of his collection is now stored in Tang Yun Art Museum located in Hangzhou. Tang also enjoyed painting on Yixing ware and then have Yixing ware artists to carve and inscribe.
