Cast iron mechanical bank in the shape of a Novelty Bank building, with two chimneys, functioning front door with man inside, having red, blue and yellow paint to the building and red paint to the roof, by J. E. Stevens, Co., Cromwell, CT, circa 1873, with patent dates marked on rear wall

A similar example of this bank was sold at Bertoia Auctions of Vineland, NJ in 2011 for $25,875.John and Elisha Stevens formed the J & E Stevens Company in 1843 in Cromwell, CT. A turning point in the company?s development came in 1869 with the production of their first cast-iron mechanical bank. That bank, featuring a monkey that popped out of building, inspired numerous competitors to produce similar products and helped create a new genre of product that blended art and function in ways that sparked the imagination and ingenuity of designers. Between 1869 and 1890, the J & E Stevens Company produced more than 300 different models of mechanical banks.
