Including 5 compasses (two in wooden cases, one in leather case, two uncased), one magnifying glass in leather case, one Miles Hoffritz pedometer, and a framed print of a mariner's compass etching by S. Emery, with with engraver's signature Callender, S.P under the fleur-de-lis, in a burled maple frame

By descent through the family of an important South Salem, NY collector
S. Emery is considered one of the finest instrument makers of his day. He worked from circa 1809 to 1870 as an instrument maker in Salem, MA with a shop at 2 Water Street, (1809) and at 162 Derby Street (by 1864). He appeared on the 1870 census taken at Salem MA, listed as a nautical instrument maker.
