About the sculptor: Son of State Councilor Ludwig Paul (Alexander Pavlovich) Lancere (1815-1869) (son of Major of the Napoleonic army Paul Lancere, who received Russian citizenship) and Eleonora Antonovna Yakhimovskaya (1824-1856), pupils of the Barons Vornezius (who lived in Morshansk).
Born in Morshansk, entered the local gymnasium. Since childhood, in his works he chose a theme that he will be passionate about all his life - horses. Subsequently, the young sculptor will make a number of long trips across Central Asia, the Caucasus and North Africa, adding to his work many ethnic images (Afghani, Arab, etc.), which greatly enriched his work.
In 1861 he moved with his family to St. Petersburg. There he graduated from the 2nd St. Petersburg gymnasium and the law faculty of St. Petersburg University [1]. He did not receive a special art education and was engaged in modeling on his own, using the advice [1] of NI Liberikh [2]. In 1872, for his work, he received the title of class artist of the 1st degree from the Academy of Arts [3]. In 1874 he was recognized as an honorary free associate of the Academy of Arts. Since 1879 he was a member of the Moscow Society of Art Lovers.
He was a major animal painter, perfectly portrayed horses, including in historical subjects. In total, he created about 400 works [3]. His works are presented in the exposition of the Radishchev Museum, the National Art Museum of Belarus, kept in the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, etc.
His son and daughter, Evgeny Evgenievich and Zinaida Evgenievna, became artists [2], the youngest son Nikolai Evgenievich became an architect.
