19th C. Fijian Tabua (Sperm Whale Tooth Pendant)
Item Details
Description
South Pacific, Fiji Islands, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A polished sperm whale tooth pendant known as a tabua, this example of impressive size. The surfaces feature abstract incised striations that have smoothed over time, some lines seemingly creating stars or gridwork patterns. The tooth is quite dense, and has a lovely orange and yellow hue, which was often enhanced by rubbing turmeric and coconut oil across the tooth, or by heating over a smokey fire. Size: 5.9" L x 2.2" W x 1.5" H (15 cm x 5.6 cm x 3.8 cm); 7.375" H (18.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Tabua are pierced and braided whale teeth, originally taken from the lower jaw of sperm whales found stranded on Fijian beaches. Because whale strandings are relatively rare in Fiji, whale teeth are highly valued. In Pacific Island societies, some objects have a cultural value that far outweighs their market value. In Fijian society, tabua are examples of this kind of object. Fijians consider tabua to be kavakaturanga (chiefly items). Not worn, but are presented at important ceremonies, including weddings, births, and funerals. Tabua used to be the most effective way to give weight to an apology or atonement. The occasion that tabua are presented at also determines their spiritual value.

US law on whale teeth states items must be made prior to 1970 to be legal to sell, however, we suggest checking your state/country laws for importation from Colorado.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
