Item Details
Description
Richard Roundtree Set of (4) Personally Owned John W. Jones Confederate Currency: The Color of Money Collection Framed Art Prints - This set of (4) framed art prints from John W. Jones' Confederate Currency: The Color of Money Collection was personally owned by the late actor Richard Roundtree. The Color of Money Collection investigates the importance of slavery in the economy of the South. Artist John W. Jones has researched and documented over 126 images of slavery that were depicted on Confederate and Southern States money. The juxtaposition of the images of Confederate Currencies with the images inspired by the slave images on the currencies makes a very powerful statement on the contribution of enslaved Africans to the American economy. These prints are each signed by the artist in pencil and are professionally matted and framed. The lot includes the following prints: Slaves Picking Cotton, Slave Carrying Cotton, Slave Picking Cotton, and Slave With Horses. Each print includes an image of Confederate currency from which the art was inspired. Measurements: 18 x 22 inches. These prints hung in the Los Angeles home of Richard Roundtree and come directly from the Roundtree Trust. They were purchased from Harlem Art in Raleigh, North Carolina. Richard Roundtree was best known for his portrayal of private detective John Shaft in the 1971 film Shaft and four of its sequels. Considered as "the first Black action hero", Roundtree was credited with having an impact on the rise of African American leading actors in Hollywood projects, thanks to his successful performances in the genre. Over his five decades as an actor, he has appeared in some 160 film and television projects, sharing the screen with actors including Clint Eastwood, Peter O'Toole, Laurence Olivier, Samuel L. Jackson, and Brad Pitt, and received numerous awards, such as an MTV Lifetime Achievement Award, a Peabody Award, and a Black Theater Alliance Lifetime Achievement Award.
