Description
Richard Roundtree Personally Owned 1978 Varnette Honeywood "Sabbath" Limited Edition Signed Print #33/250 - This 1978 limited edition print titled "Sabbath" by Varnette P. Honeywood was personally owned by the late actor Richard Roundtree. Varnette Honeywood was a prolific artist known for her visual statements of Black lifestyles on canvas, inspired by the people and places in her community. From 1984 to 1992, Honeywood’s work was popularized by its appearance on The Cosby Show; the paintings were prominently displayed in the rooms of the Huxtable home. In the 1990s, Honeywood created the characters and provided illustrations for the 12 titles in the series "Little Bill Books for Beginning Readers," which provided the basis for "Little Bill," the animated series broadcast on CBS from 1999 to 2004, for which she served as a consultant. Honeywood’s work reached mass audiences through expanding collaborations across popular culture: book covers, magazine illustrations, film, and television, and she achieved widespread fame. She is recognized by contemporary artists today for her significant contribution, helping to envision and shape Black visual culture. This print is hand signed by the artist and hand titled along with the edition number 33/250. This piece hung in Roundtree's Los Angeles home, and comes directly from the Roundtree Trust. Measurements: 19.5 x 36 inches (framed). Richard Roundtree was best known for his portrayal of private detective John Shaft in the 1971 film Shaft and four of its sequels. Considered as "the first Black action hero", Roundtree was credited with having an impact on the rise of African American leading actors in Hollywood projects, thanks to his successful performances in the genre. Over his five decades as an actor, he has appeared in some 160 film and television projects, sharing the screen with actors including Clint Eastwood, Peter O'Toole, Laurence Olivier, Samuel L. Jackson, and Brad Pitt, and received numerous awards, such as an MTV Lifetime Achievement Award, a Peabody Award, and a Black Theater Alliance Lifetime Achievement Award.
