Item Details
Description
Carey, Mathew (publisher). CAREY’S GENERAL ATLAS. Philadelphia: Printed by Mathew Carey, May 1, 1796. FOLIO (14.75 x 9.5 inches), COMPLETE AS PUBLISHED (including a Rare Map of The United States by Samuel Lewis dated 1795) and with the following THREE ADDITIONS: (a) British settlements in America (Lewis, 1812); (b) John Scott’s 1826 Indiana, rev. & corr. 1827; (c) later Indiana newspaper map taken from unidentified newspaper and mounted herein. Except for the Indiana newspaper map, hand-colored boarders throughout, as issued. ADDITIONAL COLORING added at an early date to the map of France. PROVENANCE: Clamped typographic ownership ink-stamp “D.Woodbridge.jr” (no spaces) on titlepage with manuscript addition “No. 8”, and the following inscription penciled in early hand on verso of back fly-leaf: “John Morgan Woodbridge | Born - April 20- 1817. | At Oxford ————— 1833. | At Yale ————— 1836. | At Princeton ————— 1838.” NOTE: Dudley Woodbridge, Jr., whose very early ink-stamp adorns this volume, lived 1778-1853, and died in Marietta, Ohio. His father Judge Dudley Woodbridge, Sr. (1747-1823) was born in Stonington, Connecticut, served in the Revolution, migrated with his wife and children to Marietta (where he, too, died) in 1789, and was called by some earlier historians “THE FIRST MERCHANT OF THE GREAT NORTHWEST.” Dudley Jr.’s son John Morgan Woodbridge lived 1817-1871, attended Miami University (Oxford, OH) and (as a theological student) Yale and Princeton, and also ended his days in Marietta. CONDITION: Complete with all 45 maps (and three additional maps, as noted above), but neither clean nor otherwise undamaged. Most maps are STAINED, many are marginally torn and/or ruffled, amateurishly repaired along folds, etc., but only the NORTH CAROLINA map exhibits serious loss (it lacks a vertical strip running top to bottom inside the right side plate mark). Disbound, yet sewn and glued (on new and old tabs) by a modern restorer (circa 1990?). Withal, still a MONUMENT in the history of United States cartography AND OF EARLY OHIO BOOK OWNERSHIP, with titlepage documentation of this.
Condition
WE HAVE ADDITIONAL PHOTOS OF ALL THE MAPS THAT CAN BE EMAILED UPON REQUEST.
