AN AMERICAN CIVIL WARTIME FRACTIONAL CURRENCY SHIELD, SIGNED BY U.S. TREASURER F.E. SPINNER AND REGISTERS OF THE U.S. TREASURY, AUGUST 11 1864-MARCH 15, 1869, ink lithograph on paper with affixed fractional currencies, grey shield, some fractional curries are signed in manuscript ink, "F.E. Spinner," U.S. Treasurer, together with "S.B. Colby," Register of the United States Treasury, and/or "Noah L. Jeffries," as Register of the U.S. Treasury, respectively; 23 1/2" x 19 1/2", framed 27" x 22 3/4"

Other Notes: The present lot was used in financial institutions throughout the U.S. during wartime to thwart counterfeit monies from entering the banking system. Sold by the U.S. Treasury Department. Francis E. Spinner, 10th Treasurer of the United States, served during active Civil War time, an endorsement in manuscript ink is found on one fraction note that has his portrait. Stoddard Belham "S.B." Colby, Register of the U.S. Treasury from August 11, 1864 - September 21, 1867. Noah L. Jeffries, Register of the U.S. Treasury from October 5, 1867 - March 15, 1869.
Condition
With darkened glue repairs, indrawing, creasing, apparent darkening/yellowing, fading, and general expected wear is typical for the Currency Bureau stored works.
