AN AMERICAN AMBASSADORIAL GIFT OF STATE CIGAR BOX, TO AMBASSADOR OF CUBA JEFFERSON CAFFERY, HAVANA, FOREIGN SERVICE 1934-1937, exquisitely carved mahogany signed L/R, "P. LOPEZ," the lid with bas relief of the Cuban Coat of Arms and the American eagle, the lid interior with special dedication, "SELECCION ESPECIAL PARA Su Excelencia El Sr. Embajador JEFFERSON CAFFERY," with an oval logo, "PERLA DEL OCEANO FABRICA DE TABACOS HABANA," presented by Roberts & Co., located at Zenea No. 25, fitted on the interior with varying cigar trays, matches space and other fittings specially cut for cigar connoisseur accouterment. Height: 5 1/2" Width: 23" Depth: 15 1/2" Provenance: By descent from Dr. Philip F. Dur, Jefferson Caffery Honor Professor at the University of Southwest Louisiana, bequeathed by Ambassador Caffery.

Other Notes: Jefferson Caffery was a distinguished Foreign Service Officer. He served under eight presidents in a career that spanned forty-three years. he then served as private chamberlain to three popes in Rome. He served as U.S. Ambassador to Colombia, Cuba, Brazil, France (1944-1949), and Egypt (1949-1955). Jeffery Caffery was awarded the Foreign Service Cup in 1971 and recognized as the dean of the U.S. Foreign Service by his fellow Foreign Service Officers. He was bestowed knighthood in the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. Finally, exit 100 on Interstate Highway 10 in Lafayette, Louisiana is marked as "The Ambassador Caffery Pkwy." Provenance: By descent from Dr. Philip F. Dur, Jefferson Caffery Honor Professor at the University of Southwest Louisiana, bequeathed by Ambassador Caffery.
