A LATE BAROQUE CARVED WHITE OAK "ALTAR" ANGEL, 18TH CENTURY, carved wood, the youthful angel with backswept waving hair, gazes to the right and upward, the carving likely a piece of an ecclesiastic shrine or altar presentation; the angel wears a billowing robe that appears to weightlessly float below an outstretched arm, holding a book in the other hand, the feet carved in detail with naturalism as they climb heavenward. Height: 40" Width: 29" Depth: 21"

Apparent heavy, old exposure to woodworm having small holes throughout the sculpture, typical for the age of work. Remnants of gesso and paint, breaks, repairs, losses, cracks, buttery edges to carving, mounted on a metal pole, now with iron attachments. Restoration is apparent to one arm and no original to the sculpture. The wood is dry with some brittle areas.
