This is a remarkable automaton, used in the streets of Paris at the end of the 19th century. It was made by the J. A. Jost Co., and it is illustrated in its company catalog, as well as in the "Chance Collection Sales Catalog." The machine consists of a clown who climbs the pole with a long stick. The toys above him are spinning as he climbs, so it is unknown as to which toy he will pluck with his long stick. This gambling component makes it very desirable, both to coin-op and automaton collectors. CONDITION: This automaton is all original, from the stanchions on the base to the felt top to all the toys, as well as the clown himself. It is unlikely that another working example exists in the world today, as this one-of-a-kind automaton is simply a pleasure to watch. It has the original Paris street license issued for its operation attached to the base and comes with other paper material from the catalog in 1890.
