An antique late 18th-century English engraving on paper. The artwork depicts a multi-figure genre scene, a family in prison cell. Titled John Howard, Esq. Visiting and Relieving the Miseries of a Prison in the bottom middle. Painted by Francis Wheatley, 1747 to 1801, a British artist, member of the Royal Academy of Arts. Engraved by James or Jacob Hogg, born 1761, a British printmaker. Published by Thomas Simpson, 1765 to 1801, a British printseller based in London, England. Dated April 9, 1790. Grey mat, golden frame. John Howard, 1726 to 1790, was an English philanthropist and prison reformer. Collectible Graphic Art Prints.
