Item Details
Description
Antique Victorian enamelware set, children cup and plate, both are marked G.M.T.Co., Germany, the mark by Gustav M. Thurnauer used 1883 until 1887. The plate features a colorful picture of two Dutch boys walking by the water. The cup pictures three children playing.
Enamelware: metal [tin] cookware coated in a porcelain lining that makes it easy to clean, safe to heat and long-lasting. Although it's best known for being lightweight.
The plate is c.7" [17.8cm] across, c.1" [2.5cm] deep. The cup is 4" x c.2.1/2" [10.1cm x 6.4cm], a few areas where the enamel has chipped off, which is consistent with age and usage. Good/ very good condition.
Gustav M. Thurnauer established his business in New York City in 1883. He was specialized on kitchen utensils and everything else required in a kitchen, including various household items-- initially all exported from Germany. The mark "G.M.T.Co." was in use until his brother joint the business in 1887, and the mark was changed to "G.M.T. & Bro." / G.M. Thurnauer & Bro. [1887-c.1914]. Around 1914 Thurnauer Company became incorporated, and the mark was changed to "G.M.T. Co. Inc." [The company was still in business in the 1960s-early 1970s].
