Notes:
Frank Knox Morton Rehn was a highly successful marine painter, his style heavily influenced by French Impressionism. In fact, he is said to be one of the first Americans to introduce Impressionism to his fellow countrymen despite never having studied abroad. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with Christian Schussele, where his course work included portraiture, marine, still life and figure painting. He then supported himself with portrait commissions and by selling terracotta plates. He painted landscapes and still lifes, winning several exhibition awards for these subjects, but a trip to the New Jersey shore turned his interest to seascapes and marine painting.

He moved to New York City in 1881 and set up a studio at the Hotel Chelsea, a location he occupied for the remainder of his life. He died in Magnolia, Massachusetts, where he summered each year.
Condition
Although the painting presents a very well under natural light, UV inspection reveals some varnish inconsistencies and a couple of tiny spots of potential paint restoration. Thin line of wear due to frame rub at bottom edge. The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects. All items may have normal signs of age and wear commensurate with their age; these issues will likely not be mentioned in the condition report. Please contact Eldred's before the auction with any condition questions. Questions about condition will not be answered after purchase.
