Portrait of Jared Mansfield, professor of mathematics, West Point. Unsigned. By descent in the Mansfield family. According to family, Mansfield was so beloved by his students at West Point that the cadets commissioned Sully to paint his portrait. Purportedly there are three versions, one at West Point, one at Yale University and this version, which Sully gave to Mansfield as a thank-you for introducing Sully to Thomas Jefferson, who became a close personal friend.

Notes:
Thomas Sully was born in Great Britain but lived most of his life in Philadelphia. He painted in the style of Thomas Lawrence and his subjects included national political leaders Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson, Revolutionary War hero General Marquis de Lafayette, and leading musicians and composers. In addition to painting portraits of his wealthy patrons, he also painted landscapes and historical scenes such as "The Passage of the Delaware" in 1819. His work was adapted for use on United States coinage.

Relined. UV light inspection reveals some small spots of paint restoration.
