Description
Manuscript document. Morgan County, Illinois, 1 August 1836. 1 page. Undersigned.
A record of votes by precinct for the 1836 election for a seat in the U.S. Congress. The candidates were Democrat William L. May and Whig John Todd Stuart (written here as “Stewart”), a friend and law partner of Abraham Lincoln. The two met during the Black Hawk War, where they served in the same battalion. Stuart encouraged Lincoln to study law and they were partners between 1837 and 1841. Stuart was also a favorite cousin of Mary Todd Lincoln.
Although his 1836 candidacy was ultimately unsuccessful, Stuart would be elected to Congress from 1839-1843 and again in 1863-1865 (Stuart was a frequent White House visitor during this time).
[Abraham Lincoln, Politics, Civil War] [Politics, Abraham Lincoln, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Martin van Buren, Illinois, Manuscripts, Documents, Letters, Ephemera, Republican Party, Whig Party, Civil War, Union]
