Contemporary ink caption to recto: "Richard S. Winslow. Co. H., 54th Regt., Mass. Vols. 1863-4-5. Period ink inscription to verso repeats the caption, alongside later(?) pencil inscription reading: "GAR Post 83,, South Shore, MA."
A handsome post-war "Grand Army of the Republic" GAR portrait of Richard S. Winslow, a veteran of the famed 54th Massachusetts Infantry. Winslow's GAR veteran's medal is prominently displayed on his jacket.
Winslow (alt. Windslow) was a 33-year-old shoemaker from South Scituate, Massachusetts when he mustered in on 10 December 1863 as a private into Company H. of the 54th. He would serve the entirety of the war, fighting at the Battle of Grimball's Landing, and most famously, the Second Battle of Fort Wagner. The Second Battle of Fort Wagner claimed the lives of nearly half the regiment, including that of commander Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. Winslow was wounded on 10 April 1865 at Sumter, South Carolina from an accidental wound in his foot.
