Description
Samuel Wittum, Alias Jack Cooper. Albumen CDV vignetted illustrated portrait after a photograph. Ravenna, Ohio: Ford & Oakley, 1866. Caption and copyright statement printed to mount recto. Photographer's imprint to mount verso next to the statement: "Photographed by Artificial Light in Portage County Jail."

An early True Crime photographic souvenir. Samuel Wittum alias "Jack Cooper," was convicted of murdering 56-year-old John Rodenaugh in 1865. After meeting at a tavern in Portage County, Ohio, Wittum and an accomplice (Joel Beery) tailed Rodenaugh and murdered the man on his way home. The subsequent trial and conviction of Wittum and Beery was a sensation in Portage County. Wittum was hanged in 1866, while Beery was sentenced to life in prison. Curiously, Rodenaugh's grandson would also be murdered 30 years later in an unrelated case.
