Description
VICTORIAN WOVEN HAIR MOURNING WREATH, various shades of hair intricately woven on a metal wire frame with black thread wrapping into floral arrangements, featuring a large wreath with open end to center featuring metal bead accents, framing a small bouquet with a silk ribbon tied around the stems. Housed under glass in a probably original shadow box frame. Second half 19th century. 15 1/2" x 19 1/2" sight, 20" x 24" OA.
Deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum, Richmond, VA to benefit collections care, preservation, and future acquisitions.
Condition
Very good visual condition with some wear, spots of unwoven and fraying hair, several beads with oxidation, backing paper with a few spots of tears, frame with minor wear and surface scratches, a few losses to painted and gilt accents, back lower edge with canvas lining becoming detached causing the backing boards to be partially loose. Not examined out of frame.
