[Exploration] Gregg, Josiah. Commerce of the Prairies: or the Journal of a Santa Fe Trader, during eight expeditions across the Great Western Prairies, and a residence of nearly nine years in Northern Mexico. Published by New York: Henry G. Langley, 1845. Second edition. 2 volumes. 8vo. xvi (1) 17-323 (24 ads), viii (1) 9-327 pp. Original brown cloth, gilt horse and rider in center of embossed frame on upper covers, gilt titles and designs on spine, Vol. I spine ends lightly chipped corners lightly bumped, cover gilt VG spine gilt good, folding map of Indian Territory before page 17 with some old tape repairs but complete and clean, other b/w plates throughout volume, Vol. II covers detached from text block, lower 1/3 of spine lacking, cover and spine gilt good, upper endleaf and frontis attached to cover, both volumes in clear protective plastic wrap, name on endleaves of both volumes ``J. H. Bradley / Library", one page map before page 9, frontis plates both volumes with frontis in volume two attached with clear tape, 4 wood engraved plates and 3 three text vignettes, text blocks in both volumes clean with scattered foxing, 2nd edition 1st issue with folding map published by J. and H. G. Langley, New York. Wheat calls the folding map, which is one of the first to show the Staked Plains of Texas, "a cartographic landmark" (Wheat, Mapping the Transmississippi West II). Folding map with tape repair two tears of 3" and 6" in length and a third unmended tear along a fold of 3".
