II and III 4to) xxxiii (7) 418 (2 ads); (12) 355-674; (8) 371 (1 errata); viii (10) 154 (2) xciii (full page plates) pp., all volumes recently rebound in green niger and marblesmith paper, raised bands, gilt titles on spines, hand tied headbands, recent bookplates, name of binder bottom obverse upper end leaf. 'Mary Curteis 1817' in ink on titles of Volumes I and IV, all 4 volumes of apparent 4th editions published in 1776, contents of all volumes remarkably clean throughout, illustrated with 221 (of 226) engraved plates (some folding) after drawings by P. Paillou, G. Edwards, and Desmoulins plus pages of sheet music, most plates with notable offsetting to opposing pages, all plates very good, lacking one plate Volume II (XIII Basking Shark), lacking 4 plates in Volume III (LXXIV Oyster Catcher, XCVII Mallard Duck, VII (Appendix) Egret, VIII Little Bittern) (all five missing plates supplied in facsimile), extremely nice copies in attractive bindings. Testacea.]Pennant (1726-98) was a distinguished English naturalist and traveler who wrote numerous books on natural history and travel, including two on the zoology of India and the Arctic. Elected a fellow of the Royal Society, he corresponded regularly with all of the leading naturalists of the day, including Linnaeus, Sir Joseph Banks and Buffon, using much of their research in his books. He greatly contributed to "organizing, popularizing and promoting the study of natural history."
