Watercolor on paper 17 x 10 in, 23 x 19 in (framed). The following is from her obituary:JANE DOWNS CARTER SEPT. 25, 1918 - DEC. 5, 2005 Florida artist Jane Downs Carter died December 5. She was 87. Following graduation with a degree in journalism from West Virginia University in 1938, she attended the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore and the Art Students' League in New York City. After marriage to Samuel F. Carter she established a studio in Palm Beach and taught at Norton Art Gallery. In 1946 under Rosenwald grants she introduced art teaching in Georgia rural areas, and in 1947 taught in the coal mining areas of West Virginia through the Clarksburg Art Center. Ms. Carter was a native of Morgantown, WV, born Jane Downs, the daughter of William Smith Downs, a civil engineer and West Virginia University professor, and Nellie Jane Albright, a musician. The summer of 1947, and in 1949, she painted in the artists' community of New Hope, PA. In 1960 in Ankara, Turkey, a Muslim country, she mounted a major exhibition of her work, which increasingly was drawing from spiritual Biblical themes, at the Turkish Officers' Club. She also organized works of several Turkish artists and in 1963 exhibited them in a show at the Flagler Museum in Palm Beach. While living in Georgetown in Washington D.C., she created an educational system incorporated as Studio 7 Education Through Art based in Romney, WV. Later this was revised into Studio 7 Education through Art with the Bible Loved. In 1987 she settled in Lake Worth, FL and was an active member in branch Churches of Christ, Scientist—Lake Worth and, recently, West Palm Beach.
