A pair of antique French oil on canvas painting depicting portraits of noble women. First. Portrait of Louise Duchesse de Roquelaure, 1583 to 1610, wife of the Antoine II, Duke of Granmont who served at the court of Henry III, Henry IV, and Louis XIII. The marriage of Louise and Antoine is famous for the fact that, having accused his wife of treason, the Duke tried to have her beheaded. While the litigation was ongoing, Louise died under unclear circumstances. Second. Portrait of Claudine de Beranger du Gua, Ist Duchesse des Lesdiguieres, 1551 to 1608, wife of Francois de Bonne, Marshal of France under Henry IV. Unsigned. Oval format, matching golden frames with name plaques. Handwritten biography notes attached to the backside of both artworks. Collectible European Fine Art, Historical Relics.
